Favorite hard-working houseplants

Incorporating plants in design adds a calming, natural touch to interiors while purifying the air. Plants offer many benefits that may improve quality of life…if you can keep them alive. Read on for my favorite hard-working houseplants that are beautiful and virtually indestructible.

Snake plant

Snake plant is one of the most resilient plants to incorporate in a home. It thrives on little light and an unpredictable watering schedule. Its variegated vertical foliage is striking and works well in a corner or compact space. Make a statement by setting snake plant on an elevated stand, or add texture by grouping with other houseplants.

When my children were toddlers they’d pull snake plant leaves completely out of the pot. I’d stick them back in the dirt, and the leaves miraculously kept growing. Snake plant is my favorite hard-working houseplant.

ZZ plant

Next on the list of my favorite hard-working houseplants is the ZZ plant. They have thick, waxy, bright green leaves, and only require watering monthly. ZZ plants work equally well indoors and outdoors, but bring them in once outdoor temperatures drop. A surefire way to kill a ZZ plant is leaving it out in freezing temperatures.

I like using smaller ZZ plants on desks or as part of a console table vignette. Ingesting the leaves can cause GI upset, so keep them elevated away from pets or young children. ZZ plants are known to symbolize growth, prosperity, and stability.

Pothos

Rounding out my favorite hard-working houseplants is pothos. Pothos thrives in low light and produces beautiful, trailing foliage. Pothos are my favorite plants for shelving or bathrooms. Their trailing behavior adds interest, they require little care, and the extra moisture they get from a shower helps stretch waterings to three or even four weeks. If they start looking dry, a little watering will surely bring them back.

House plants are the finishing touch for a modern organic interior. Most of the large plants in our designs are faux, but we always incorporate real plants for their health and healing properties. Real or faux, plants add life to any room.
